Back on the Trail, Back to Reality
After a much-needed break, I'm eager to share my latest adventure as I resume my Appalachian Trail journey. Day 112 marked my return to the trail, and what a return it was! Vermont welcomed me with a rugged embrace, a stark contrast to the smoother paths of previous states.
A Rugged Welcome
The trail's character shifted dramatically as I entered Vermont. A 700-ft climb over a mile set the tone, revealing the state's notorious ruggedness. The infamous Vermont mud made an early appearance, hinting at the challenges ahead. This shift in terrain is a fascinating aspect of long-distance hiking. Each state, like a new chapter in a book, offers unique landscapes and obstacles. Personally, I find this variety exhilarating. It keeps the journey fresh and demands adaptability, a skill every hiker must hone.
The Evening Trek
As the afternoon turned to evening, my pace remained steady despite a slight sluggishness from the break. I reached the Congdon Shelter, but a desire for solitude and better accommodations led me further. The search for an ideal campsite became a mini-adventure in itself, highlighting the importance of flexibility in outdoor pursuits. What many don't realize is that finding the perfect spot can be as much art as science. It's about reading the land, understanding your needs, and sometimes, a bit of luck.
I eventually settled for a site, not ideal but workable, a mile beyond my intended destination. This detour is a reminder that hiking rarely goes exactly as planned. It's about embracing the unexpected and making the most of each situation. This adaptability is what truly defines the outdoor spirit.
The Stats and the Journey Ahead
Day 112 ended with 10 miles covered, a significant ascent, and a stealth campsite. These numbers, while impressive, only tell part of the story. They don't capture the beauty of the Vermont landscape or the sense of accomplishment after a challenging day. They are mere markers of progress, a way to measure the physical journey, but they can't quantify the personal growth and experiences.
As I continue my hike, I'm excited to see what Vermont has in store. The trail's ruggedness suggests a more demanding journey, but I embrace these challenges. They are opportunities to grow, learn, and create unforgettable memories. This is the essence of thru-hiking—an adventure where the destination is less important than the journey itself, and each day brings new discoveries and insights.
